By Chief Brian Cusick
August 31, 2014

On August 31, 2014 at approximately 2253 hours, Boat 5 was dispatched for Mutual Aid to Calvert County t for the boat in distress with subjects in the water in the Patuxent River. Boat 5 quickly responded with four personnel.

Boat 5 arrived in the area shortly after launching and made contact with a civilian boat in the area. The civilian boat stated that they were friends of those in distress and were searching for them. After receiving more information from the command element on shore, Boat 5 and the civilian boat searched the North end of the area while Calvert units searched the South end. Communications thru command to the boat in distress assisted Boat 5 in locating the drifting vessel. Boat 5 made contact with the vessel, provided them with life jackets and a strobe light. Boat 5 also arranged a tow for the vessel.

Boat 5 obtained information from the two still on the boat on the two that were missing in the water. Boat 5 rejoined the search for the two in the water with the civilian boat. The civilian boat put eyes on one of the victims in the water and brought them on board. They then signalled to Boat 5 that they needed assistance. Boat 5 met up with the civilian boat and assessed the victim that had been in the water. Boat 5 then transferred the victim into Boat 5 for warming and transport to the EMS units on shore. While in route to shore, Boat 5 met back up with the stranded vessel and towed them back to shore as their tow vessel had not arrived yet.

Boat 5 transferred all victims to EMS on shore. As Boat 5 was getting back underway to search for the second victim, they learned that he had swam back to shore and was safe. Boat 5 then returned to quarters after the successful rescue.

Units: Chief 5, Chief 5A, Boat 5 and MSU 5
