It is with great sorrow the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department, Rescue Squad and Auxillary, Inc. announces the passing of Past President, Past Chief and Life Member Robert Eugene Buck. He served the department for 56 years. Buck was known to much of the department and community of Benedict as "Pop". He was born May 25, 1932 and died at home January 27, 2015 after a long battle with kidney disease. He is survived by his wife Delores, daughter Robin, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Buck's hobbies included carpentry work and remodeling things. He retired from the US Government as a radio specialist in the 1970's.

Robert Buck joined the department in August of 1959 at which time he became the first Captain of the Rescue Squad; it was established that year. Buck had been a medic in the US Army and wanted to help the department in any way he could. He served on numerous committees and held many leadership positions throughout the years of his membership. Robert Buck was inducted into the Southern Maryland Hall of Fame in 1987 and received awards such as the Hyatt Award, Higdon Award and Charles County Association of Emergency Medical Services, Dr. Henry Burke Memorial Award. Engine 5-1 was dedicated to Pop in March of 2012. Buck's wishes were to have a full fire department funeral. Pop will take his last ride aboard "his engine" as he called it, February 3, 2015.
