The Benedict Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. attended an ice rescue class this month along with multiple companies. The class was taught by Dive Rescue International and hosted at the Tenth District VFD. On Thursday night, a short class room session was held to teach the skills. On Saturday, the class headed down to Sweden Point located on the Potomac River where the class then suited up to practice life saving drills through approximately 4 inchs of ice. The members had to do exercises from trying to pull their own self out of the water to getting in behind a victim, packaging them up and giving the awaiting team on shore the signal to pull both the rescuer and the victim out of the water and to safety. At the conclusion of the class Benedict had 4 new Ice Rescue Specialist including Probationary Firefighter Kyle Compton, Safety Officer Joe O'Neill, Probationary Member Anthony Robertson, and Probationary Member Freddie Figueroa.
