On Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 2035 hours, Benedict Rescue Engine 5-2 responded to Mill Creek Road, in Benedict, to assist an elderly woman back into bed after she had fallen out. After evaluating the patient, it was noticed she had a large laceration to her left knee. The officer requested Ambulance 5-8 for assistance. Amb 58 arrived and began patient care. Her husband (an elderly man) fell onto the bed unconscious. The officer on the scene advised communications to dispatch an additional engine company, ambulance and paramedic ambulance for the Priority 1 unconscious subject. Within approx 15 seconds, the gentleman stopped breathing and was pulseless. The Benedict units began C.P.R. immediately and Communications was advised of a " Working Code" with C.P.R. in progress. The Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) was utilized. After approximately 5 to 7 minutes of care, the patient began to respond. The patient became conscious and aware of his surroundings. While some responders were attending to the male the others continued to assist the female. The second engine crew from Benedict arrived in the command unit and assisted in loading the patient. Part of Rescue Engine 5-2's crew made up E.M.S. staffing. The elderly man was transported to the hospital. Amb 58 met Paramedic Amb 27 at Station 5. Once the medic was onboard, the patient went unconscious and ceased breathing again. The crew revived the patient a second time. The ambulance crew then met with Calvert Medic 105 enroute, at that time the patient again stopped breathing. Revived once again, the patient was delivered to the E.R. staff at the hospital, conscious, alert and breathing on his own. The female was cared for, and transported Priority 2 by Calvert Ambulance 4-7.
